Museum Planet presents a comprehensive narrated, digital show of the art created by the late pop artist Richard Bernstein. He made all of the covers of Any Warhol’s Interview Magazine for 15 years. He didn’t portray celebrities: he turned Superstars into Megastars and he was loved for it.
Richard danced with the celebrities whose portraits he created at his playground Studio 54. Everyone knew Richard. But he lived in the shadow of Andy Warhol for whom he worked. Truman Capote told Andy he would not write for Interview unless Andy made the covers. Andy let people think he did but it was Richard who created them and in the process created his own wonderful and distinct style. This is a show of 16 of Richard’s original covers and other works by him.
Original Interview Magazine cover art included are portraits of: Diana Ross, Chris Atkins, Susan Sarandon, Miguel, Bose, Joan Collins, Diane Lane, Yoko Ono, Mick Jagger, Shirley MacLaine, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Catherine Oxenberg, Aretha Franklin, Diane Keaton, Edie Murphy. Other works shown are Elizabeth Taylor (possibly a cover) and Edie Sedgwick, Back Room at Max’s Kansas City, Poppers, Grace jones, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso and Warhol (Andy) Wall.
Vanity Fair Magazine was approached to do an article on Ricard but Grayden Carter said, Why now?’ Because …..Richard Bernstein is certainly the most important forgotten artist (to all but the cognoscenti) of his generation. Included is a 7,000 word article on Richard Bernstein’s fascinating and ultimately tragic life.
Museum Planet takes you there: 41 photographs, 22 minutes of audio and 17,000 words.
